A single-entry visa is a visa that permits to enter a country one time, compared to a multiple-entry visa that enables its holders to travel to a country numerous times.

Once a traveler enters a country with a single-entry visa, they activate it. A visa for single entry cannot be used more than once. If a visitor wants to return to the country, they must apply for a new visa.

A lot of countries issue single-entry visas for short-term visits. Some of them are even available electronically. An online visa can be obtained in a few steps via an intuitive application process.

Destinations that do not offer e-Visas require applicants to obtain a single-entry visa at the embassy in person.

What is a single-entry visa

A single-entry visa is an entry permit that allows a traveler to enter the country of issue on one single occasion. A visa limited to one entry cannot be used again.

The approved visa document contains the validity period and the number of permitted entries. A traveler can enter the country only during the indicated period. Electronic visas are usually digitally connected to the applicant’s passport. In such a case, if a passport expires, a visa becomes invalid and won’t give access to a country.

Depending on the country of issue and the visitor’s nationality, a single-entry visa can be obtained through an online application process, on arrival, or at the diplomatic mission. The requirements may vary, but all applicants must prepare the necessary documentation and means to cover the processing fees.

The difference between a single-entry and multiple-entry visa

Some countries issue only single-entry tourist visas, while others enable travelers to get a multiple-entry visa which allows to enter a country more than once. Some destinations allow travelers to choose between different options.

Some multiple-entry visas are issued for a certain number of entries, for example, double-entry or triple-entry visas. There are also visas with an unlimited number of entries, which one can use to enter a country as many times as they want.

A multiple-entry visa can be very advantageous, however, a single-entry visa is normally more affordable. A traveler should plan their trip beforehand, understand the visa terms, and choose the visa type according to their purpose and itinerary.

For example, choose a single-entry Schengen visa to enter one country, but consider getting a multiple-entry one if your future plans include visiting several countries in the Schengen zone.
