Visa Sponsorship

Visa Sponsorship

A visa sponsorship can be required during a visa application process when another individual or an organization supports the traveler. Check the visa requirements before you decide to apply for a certain visa type.

Definition of a Visa Sponsorship

Visa sponsorship means that responsibility for travelers and their actions falls on a sponsor (person or entity). A sponsor submits a petition to the government so the visitor is allowed to enter the country.

The requirements for sponsorship differ according to the type of visa and the country. Note that in many cases, the sponsor needs to declare financial support in the petition. There are many types of sponsorship visas. For example, you can apply for a Canadian sponsorship visa.

Who needs to have a Visa Sponsorship

In some cases, visa sponsorship is required. It all depends on the country’s visa policy and the purpose of the visit. The sponsor may be needed in the following circumstances: when proof of financial stability is necessary, for employment purposes, and residency in a foreign country where a family member lives. Check all the details about these cases below.

Family Immigration Sponsorship

Immigration that is related to the family is a very common sponsorship in the United States or Canada. A citizen or permanent resident can sponsor a relative during the visa application by writing a proper petition. It is a necessary document, as the visa application can be rejected without it.

Employer-Sponsored Visa

Foreign nationals are frequently permitted to enter a country for the purpose of finding work. In this case, they should have an official job offer and be sponsored by an employer who states the visitor will be working in the company as a legal working resident.

Financial Sponsorship

Some countries, such as those in the Schengen area, require proof that you are financially stable. So in order to obtain a specific visa type, you must have a bank statement with confirmation of sufficient funds.

If you don’t meet financial conditions, you must have a sponsor who will cover the travel expenses in the country during your stay.

Documents Required for a Visa Sponsorship

The visa sponsorship depends on individual requirements of the country’s policy. Usually, you need to have the following documents:

  • A letter signed by the sponsor
  • A scanned copy of the sponsor’s passport or ID
  • Evidence of address
  • Documents that state the finances of a sponsor.

Note that sponsors are not responsible for visitor taxes or private debts (such as medical bills, accommodation costs, card payments, etc.).

Who can’t be a sponsor

In most cases, the following people are not eligible to be sponsors:

  • current prisoners
  • those who don’t pay alimony or payments linked to a child support
  • the individuals who declared bankruptcy
  • those who received social assistance (not due to disability)
  • people who missed payments, made late payments, or didn’t pay back immigration loan
  • individuals who haven’t met the sponsorship agreement before
  • sexual or violent crime offenders.
