Tanzania eVisa general information

Tanzania eVisa is an online visa for eligible foreigners who want to enter the country. It has been launched by the Tanzanian Government to make the application process effortless and attract more travelers.

Tanzanian online visa is a single-entry visa valid for a month (30 days) from the arrival date. However, US citizens are able to apply for a multiple-entry visa to Tanzania which stays effective for one year and permits a 90-day stay.

Travelers can easily apply for a Tanzania visa online. All needed is to fill out the form on the website, attach the required documents, pay the fee and make a paper copy of a Tanzania electronic visa that arrived at the email address as a PDF document.

Before arrival, you should choose which border crossing point you want to use, as only some stipulated airports and land border crossings accept electronic visas in Tanzania.

Types of Tanzania electronic visas

According to the purpose of traveling, there are two types of a Tanzania online visa:

• Tanzania tourist visa – this Tanzania eVisa permits one to enter the country for tourism, exploring new places, sightseeing, as well as for visiting family or friends; it allows a 30-day stay;
• Tanzania transit visa – you should use this type if you travel to Tanzania only to get to your next destination; it allows you to stay in the country for seven days.

Both Tanzania visas permit a single entry. Note that even if you want to stay in the country for less than seven days, you should apply for a tourist eVisa to Tanzania, as the transit type doesn’t allow tourist usage.

Tanzania eVisa validity

The validity of the Tanzania eVisa can be different. The selected type of visa is what determines how long the visa stays effective.

The Tanzania tourist visa is valid for 30 days from issuance. However, US citizens can enjoy a multiple-entry visa to Tanzania issued for 90 days.

If you need to get through Tanzania to another country, you should obtain a transit Tanzania visa with a period of effectiveness of 7 days.

Transit information

Even if the only reason you are planning to come to Tanzania is to use it as a transit to get to your next or final destination, you still have to get a Tanzania visa.

You should apply for a transit visa to Tanzania that stays valid for 7 days and is designed specifically for transit purposes.

It is very easy to apply for the Tanzania eVisa. You do not have to go to an embassy or consulate, you can do it anywhere at any time – at home or during another trip, in the morning or at midnight.

Requirements for Tanzania visa online application

First of all, in order to apply for a Tanzania electronic visa, you must have a working device with a stable internet connection, the ability to pay online, and an active email address.

You also have to provide the following required documents:

• A photograph of the valid passport (it must not expire within six months after the planned date of arrival to Tanzania). Note that Tanzania eVisa links directly to the passports, so if there are any changes in the data or the passport gets lost or expired, the electronic visa to Tanzania becomes invalid too.
• A photograph of the applicant’s face – it can be taken by phone or PC camera.
• Proof of having a return ticket (for a Tanzania tourist visa) or an onward ticket (for a transit visa type).

Upon arrival, the customs officials will check the validity of two mandatory documents – a passport and a paper copy of the Tanzania eVisa. Then they will give you a stamp with the stated date of returning to your origin country or going to another country for transit purposes.
