FMM Mexico – General Information

The Mexico Tourist Card, known as the Mexico FMM Card (Forma Migratoria Múltiple), is a mandatory document allowing single entry to Mexico for all foreigners traveling by land for purposes of tourism and leisure. An approved permit is valid for 180 days.

The document was introduced in 2015 by Mexican officials in order to facilitate keeping control of the number of foreigners that enter Mexico. It also is a great help in monitoring what kind of visitors decide to travel to Mexico.

The Mexico FMM Card is not a visa. Therefore, you must apply for the FMM Card even if your country is exempt from the visa requirement. The Mexican Tourist Card and the Mexican visa are two different documents and cannot replace one another.

The Mexico FMM Card online application is very convenient. Complete the registration form, submit the required document, and pay the processing fee. An approved document will be delivered in PDF form to your e-mail address. Remember to print it out before your travel.

On arrival to Mexico, visit the immigration office and present the guards with the authorized Mexico FMM Card and your Mexico Tourist Visa (if applicable). Before leaving for the journey, make sure your selected port of entry does accept the Mexican Tourist Card.

The Mexico Tourist Card fees are compulsory, with a price of 49 EUR. There are many online payment methods available, including credit card, debit card, and PayPal. Choose the most convenient one and finalize the payment.

Who Needs Mexico FMM?

Every foreign citizen traveling to Mexico by land is required to apply for the Mexico Tourist Card online. Once you have obtained the permit, you are allowed to stay in Mexico for up to 180 days from the date of entry and enjoy leisure, vacation, and tourism.

It is crucial to remember that the Mexico FMM is a travel document, not a work permit, and it does not allow you to take up employment abroad. If you wish to pursue work in Mexico, apply at the nearest Embassy for a Work Visa.

Mexico FMM Application Form

The Mexico Tourist Card online application is straightforward and convenient. You can fill in the online registration form at home and it should not take more than 15 minutes of your time. Make sure your electronic device is working correctly and your Internet connection is stable.

• Provide information from your passport – complete the form with your first and last name, gender, date of birth, country of citizenship, and passport number. Some questions may also require data concerning your flight number and accommodation in Mexico.
• Prepare required documentation – before proceeding with the application, you must ensure you have a passport that will remain valid for at least 6 months from the planned date you visit Mexico. No additional documentation is needed.
• Pay the Mexico Tourist Card fee – to finalize the payment, choose one of the available online payment methods. You can select a credit card, debit card, PayPal, or Klarna to cover the 49 EUR fee.

It is highly recommended to check the completed application form if all the information you provided is correct. Any spelling mistakes may result in denied access to the country.

When authorized, your Mexico FMM Card will be delivered directly to your e-mail address. The travel document is sent in PDF form, so remember to print it out before the travel. The moment you enter Mexico, you will be asked to present a paper copy of the permit.

Mexico FMM Validity

The Mexico Tourist Card is issued for 180 days. However, on arrival to Mexico at the selected port of entry, you need to participate in an interview with the immigration officer. Depending on your performance, they may shorten the validity of your FMM Card to 30, 60, or 90 days.

Although the Mexico FMM Card is a document allowing you to enter Mexico, it will also be checked at your departure. Because it is essential to present the printed copy of the permit at the Mexican border zone while returning home, remember not to lose it. Otherwise, you may need to visit the immigration office for a replacement.

Mexico Transit Information

Regardless of your nationality, the Mexico FMM Card is mandatory in case of transit. Citizens of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Mexico may enjoy their stay for 30 days.

However, if you are a national of a country that requires a Mexican visa, but your transit will not take longer than 24 hours and you will not leave the transit area of the Mexico City International Airport, there is no need to apply for a Transit Mexico Visa.

In case you need a visa to enter Mexico and your transit will take longer than one day, you are required to apply for the Transit Mexico Visa. The registration must be conducted in person at the nearest Mexico Embassy.
